Shankar recently underwent surgery for a heart-valve replacement and failed to recover from the procedure, passing away on Tuesday, December 11 2012.   He had been suffering from respiratory and heart related symptoms during the past year.

Ravi Shankar was one of the most well known Indian musicians.  He was referred to by his peers as 'Pandit', a teacher and master of the Sanskrit language and Hindu traditions.  He was also known in contemporary music, largely for his influence on George Harrison and the Beatles.

Shankar continued to teach and perform until very recently, with his last concert performance on November 4. It has just been announced Shankar will receive a posthumous Lifetime Achievement Award at the upcoming Grammy Awards.

He is survived by his wife, Sukanya, daughters Anoushka Shankar and Norah Jones, as well as 3 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
