Harry Patch

Thom's ode to The Last Tommy

POSTED Aug 6, 2009

New Radiohead song pays tribute to WW1 veteran.

The song Harry Patch (In Memory Of) was inspired by an interview Mr Patch gave on the BBC's Today programme in 2005. Radiohead vocalist Thom Yorke heard the interview, and the way Harry spoke about war had a profound effect on the singer, moving him to write the song.

Mr Patch, who died on July 25th aged 111, was the last British survivor of the battle of Passchendaele, which lasted four months leaving more than 800,000 allied and German troops dead or wounded.

The song is available at Radiohead's official website, and all proceeds will be donated to the Royal British Legion.

Mr Patch will be buried at Wells cathedral later today.
