Beck: Morning Phase

Twelve years on the companion to Sea Change has arrived; a luxurious 47 minute journey through Beck's honest, warm and powerful songcraft.

Morning Phase opens with a 40 second swell of ascending strings that signals a fresh but familiar direction.

Beck has swapped samples and loops for live instruments and vocal harmonies, recruiting many of the same members he'd worked with on Sea Change.

However this time, instead of heartbreak the songs tell stories of optimism, perhaps inspired by Beck's recovery from a long-lasting spinal injury.

Some of the songs on the new record – I get to shout and yell. I'm like, 'Thank you!' I had a lot of ideas and things I'd been wanting to do. This last year and a half, I feel like I can really do them. Beck

Seventh track, 'Wave' is the centrepiece.

I'd had it around for a while and wasn't sure what to do with it or what it was for, but as I played it for people over the years I'd always got a reaction. It's something I wanted to include in this record and try to build around the mood of that song. Beck

After 'Wave' the record takes on a Nashville twang; interestingly this half of the album was recorded years prior at Jack White's 'Third Man Records' studio.

Morning Phase has the warm glow of Beck at his best; focussed, expansive, emotive and after such a distinguished career, the charming ability to surprise.
